MEMPHIS, Tenn. — A Memphis mother says she is thankful for the outpouring of support she’s received from the community after her 5-year-old was shot.
Shae Dukes was without reliable transportation for weeks, after her car was impounded by police after the shooting.
Thanks to a GoFundMe, she’s now able to get her car back after it was impounded by police and take her son to have surgery to remove the bullet from his left foot.
The shooting happened March 8 at the Ridgecrest Apartments. Dukes says she was sitting in front of the apartments when shots rang out.
“I got him until I started hearing him scream,” Dukes said. “So I’m just thinking he’s screaming because he hears bullets. But when I looked, checked his whole body, it was blood started to come out his shoe. So I’m like, my son, is he shot in his foot?”
Dukes took her son to the hospital before officers arrived to question her.
“They was like, ‘Can you get your car here so we can take pictures of it?’ They didn’t say they was going to take my car to hold it,” she said. “They came, they gave me the keys. They’re like, ‘We’re taking your car.’ And I’m like, ‘But we’re going to release it to you tomorrow.’”
She says it took weeks before she received a notification about the status of her car. She says it costs $300 to get the car back from impound.
Dukes set up a Gofundme to raise $4,000, both for the car and for her son’s surgery. So far, $2,600 has been donated.

Dukes said she was picking up her car Friday.
“I’m glad my son is still here,” Dukes said. “And, you know, in the worst case, you know, so God had other plans for us,” she said.
