MPD: Man held on $1.5M bond after shooting up home

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — A man seen shooting at a south Memphis house with two handguns is being held on a $1.5 million dollar bond after being arrested for attempted first-degree murder.

Charles Dawson, 23, was also charged with reckless endangerment with a deadly weapon, employment of a firearm with the intent to commit a felony, and being a convicted felon in possession of a firearm.

Police said on March 8, Dawson fired multiple shots at two people sitting on the porch of a home in the 1600 block of Michigan Avenue.

According to the victims, Dawson came to the home earlier in the day and threatened to harm a family member, and was asked to leave. They said he returned a short time later and opened fire on two people standing outside the residence.

The victims said Dawson was holding a semi-automatic handgun in each hand and continued to shoot at the house. They said at the time there was a newborn baby inside.

No one was hurt, but police said the home was riddled with bullet holes.

Court records show Dawson was arrested in 2021 for domestic assault and vandalism but was not prosecuted. In 2018, he was indicted for aggravated assault and received a pre-trial judicial diversion.

Dawson is scheduled to appear in court on the new charges Friday.
