MEMPHIS, Tenn. — A Memphis man is facing a slew of charges after police say he tried to steal two houses and was able to resell one of them.

Stuart Breakstone, 34, was booked in Shelby County for theft of property greater than $250,000, forgery, identity theft, and unlawfully drawing a property transfer document without an interest in the property.

Investigators said Breakstone forged documents to transfer properties to other names with a sale price of just $10 each.

One of the houses was in the 1600 block of Ivy Road in East Memphis, and the other was in the 800 block of Baltic Street in the Highland Heights neighborhood.

Investigators said Breakstone was able to sell the Ivy Road home valued at just over $157,000 for $82,000 before he was caught.

According to the affidavit of complaint, Breakstone and a woman were caught on camera filling out the documents at the Shelby County Register’s office.

Police said surveillance video also showed the pair withdrawing funds from the sale of the house at an ATM.

Investigators said Breakstone used a stolen driver’s license and a Social Security card to set up a fake bank account. The victim’s name was also used to steal and sell one of the properties.

MPD said the bank account and a vehicle used in another impersonation case led investigators to Breakstone. So far, he is the only person who has been arrested.

Breakstone is being held on a $110,000 bond. He is scheduled to appear in court on Monday.
