MEMPHIS, Tenn. — MPD has released the name of a man they say is responsible for intentionally hitting one of their officers during a traffic stop.
Darious Turner, 44, has been developed as the suspect in this incident.
Memphis Police say they spotted a suspicious white Cadillac STS at a gas station off Jackson Avenue Saturday evening that matched the description of car officers had seen earlier with a headlight out. When they tried to stop the car, they said the car sped off at an extremely high speed.
Detectives did not pursue the vehicle.
Officers attempted to approach the vehicle a second time but Turner tried to hit a detective before taking off.
Police say around 8 p.m., officers spotted the Cadillac again. This time it was driving slowly at Interstate 40 and Whitten Road. When officers conducted a traffic stop, Turner intentionally hit an officer.
The officer was taken to Baptist East for treatment in non-critical condition. MPD said he was treated and later released.
Police said Turner and a passenger fled on foot from the car after the incident. The passenger was detained and later released, but Turner was not found.
According to MPD, a warrant has been issued for Turner. He is being charged with aggravated assault on a first responder, evading arrest on foot, leaving the scene of an accident involving personal injury, reckless driving, driving while license is suspended/canceled/revoked, financial responsibility law, and violation of vehicle registration.
We went to his listed address Monday. A man who came to the door identified himself as his father and said he had not seen Turner for weeks.
