MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Memphis Police say a woman was shot in South Memphis after an argument with someone she knew.

Police say the shooting happened on Mississippi Boulevard near Goyer Place. Memphis Police responded to the scene just before 6:30 a.m. Sunday.

The woman went to the hospital in critical condition. Her family says she was shot in the stomach just weeks after giving birth to her daughter.

Rob Fulford, the victim’s father, says the attack happened while her 6-week-old daughter and 8-year-old son were watching.

“You shot her in front of her kids,” Fulford said.

The victim’s young son told WREG the man he saw shoot his mother had “big hair.”

“My grandson the one who told you he’d seen some big hair, this-that and the third,” Fulford said.

Soon after, while a WREG crew was still on the scene, a man matching that description darted across the street, in direct view of WREG’s dash camera.

The moment the suspect saw Fulford, he tried to explain what went wrong.

“Turn around and there he is,” Fulford said. “I’m like ‘Oh my God, you still standing here.’ He’s saying it was an accident. I’m like ‘It’s not an accident, you shot her in front of her kids.”

Memphis Police took the man into custody. The dash camera footage WREG captured helped detectives find the weapon used in the shooting.

“I thank God for y’all, because y’all seen actually where he came from, out of the bushes,” Fulford said.

Fulford says he is focused on doing what he can for his daughter and his grandson.
