WEST MEMPHIS, Ark. — A new Buc-ee’s location is planned in West Memphis, Arkansas, city leaders confirmed Tuesday.
Earlier this evening, the West Memphis city council approved Buc-ee’s coming to town.
This announcement comes days after the popular coffee chain Starbucks said it was coming to West Memphis.
Mayor Marco McClendon said in a Facebook post that the 74,000-square-foot facility would have 120 gas pumps and create around 225 jobs.
“They have several managers that’s making up to $100,000. So, that’s definitely going to reflect right here,” McClendon said. “Just from this one seed so much more is about to grow. So much is getting ready to come.”
Those in the community could not agree more.
“We need to have some job security with some of the layoffs they had here,” West Memphis resident Stephanie Webb said.
McClendon called the addition of the popular gas station a huge win for West Memphis. Tourism Director Jim Jackson called it a “game-changer.”
“85 thousand vehicles go through our city,” McClendon said. “I have been working for the longest on finding a way to get those vehicles off the interstate and stop here in West Memphis and thanks to Buc-ee’s, we are about to do that now.”
One of the reasons drivers will stop is because of the store’s celebrated snacks.
“I love the brisket and all the jerky,” McClendon said.
“The almonds and the nuts and also the toffee nuts – I like all of them to tell you the truth,” Webb said.
McClendon said another benefit of Buc-ee’s addition to West Memphis is how it will help with the city’s economy.
“It’s also going to bring in a tax revenue that’s going to be so significant from the regular sales tax as well as the ANP tax,” McClendon said.
Construction is scheduled to begin in the coming months but at this time, the grand opening date has not been released.
If the project moves forward it would be the second Buc-ee’s location in the metro Memphis area.
