Armed man shot by officers outside Hardeman County jail

BOLIVAR, Tenn. — An armed man who approached the Hardeman County Sheriff’s office Wednesday morning was killed by officers.

Tennessee Bureau of Investigation identified the deceased man as Andra Davon Murphy, 43, from Toone, TN.

No officers were injured during this incident.

TBI officials say shortly before 6 a.m., a man approached correctional officers outside the jail and started firing shots at the officers. Bolivar police reportedly responded but the man had already left.

However, TBI spokeswoman Keli McAlister said, he returned to the scene, and according to preliminary information, got out of his vehicle while still armed and confronted the officers. The officers fired back, hitting Murphy.

Officials said Murphy’s motive for approaching and shooting at correctional officers is still under investigation.

District Attorney Mark Davidson said Murphy was not a current or former employee at the Criminal Justice Complex.

Hardeman County Circuit Court was closed Wednesday. The court released the following statement on social media:

“Due to a tragic incident occurring at the CJC during the early hours of October 6th, General Sessions Court has been rescheduled to October 13th.”
