MEMPHIS, Tenn. — A woman is dead and two others are injured after a shooting in Downtown Memphis early Sunday morning.

Officers responded to the shooting in the 300 block of South Main Street at 2:56 a.m.

Three victims were located in close proximity to the scene, according to police.

A female victim was located in critical condition at Pontotoc Avenue and Main Street. A male victim was located in critical condition at Vance Avenue and Main Street. A second female was located in critical condition at Front Street and Madison Avenue.

All three victims had apparent gunshot wounds, police say.

According to reports, they were all transported to area hospitals. One of the female victims was pronounced deceased.

Police say that preliminary information suggests this was a targeted attack, not a random act of violence.

MPD says that the shooter was last seen fleeing the scene in a newer model gray four-door Dodge Charger with a black spoiler.

The shooting comes just 10 days after Memphis Police launched its new traffic safety plan in response to the mass shooting that happened downtown, earlier in August.

Eight people were injured in that incident.

Along with an increase in Memphis Police officers, the Shelby County Sheriff’s Office agreed to provide additional security through the safety plan. 

MPD previously said that officers would enforce a zero-tolerance policy for several violations including drag racing, reckless driving, and gunfire downtown in hopes of eliminating pop-up parties that might lead to chaos.

Jay Munn lives downtown and says while there was a large law enforcement presence Saturday night, it wasn’t enough to scare off the crowds.

“The police drove up and down this street at the same time when the crowd was here. The crowd dispersed, and just like anything else, it disperses and then it comes back together,” said Munn.

MPD says no arrests have been made. This is an ongoing investigation.
