MEMPHIS, Tenn. — A teenage boy is recovering after he was shot while sleeping in his bed early Tuesday morning.

According to officials, the shooting occurred in the 1200 block of Carrolton Avenue a little after 4 a.m. Officers found the 16-year-old victim suffering from a gunshot wound and took him to Regional One in critical condition.

According to a police report, the teen told officers he was sleeping in his bed when the suspect walked up to his bedroom window from outside the home and fired several shots.

The teen said he felt the shot and began screaming for help when his grandmother immediately called 911.

His grandmother, another woman, and his 3-week-old son were all in the house. Police said they were not injured.

Detectives said they recovered twelve shell casings from the front yard and found six bullet fragments in the teen’s bed.

The teen’s uncle, Michael Thomas, said he was released from the hospital but still has to undergo surgery to have bullets removed from his body.

“His head was next to the window. The bed is facing right next to that window. The shots missed his head by inches,” Thomas said. “He’s very blessed and fortunate to even be here because none of them hit him in the head, and it was very close to hitting him in the head.”

After over 60 years in the same community, they believe the attack could be targeted.

“It had to have been someone we think, I’m no detective, someone that knew he was in there and knew that the bed was in there,” Thomas said.
