One killed in Southwest Memphis shooting, man charged

This page has been updated to reflect the current arrests.

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — A man has been charged after police say he shot and killed a man in Southwest Memphis in the 3000 block of Ford Road just before 2:30 pm on Sunday.

Prior to the shooting, investigators say there was some sort of argument between the victim and another man.

Police say the victim didn’t survive his injuries.

Witnesses told WREG they heard 2 to 3 gunshots and saw a man hit the pavement. It’s unclear what the two men were arguing about, but regardless, neighbors say changes are needed.

“Put more law enforcement out on these streets to stop that. It needs to be somebody here at all time police force need to be just riding up and down this area that’s about the only reason they will stop it,” said one of the neighbors who did not want to be identified.

At one point, dozens of community members began to gather near the scene. There were emotional outbursts as loved ones reacted to news of the shooting.

While on the scene, WREG did notice that MPD was questioning a person inside of a squad car.

Lamont Murry, 32, was later charged with second degree murder.

Court records show that Murry was indicted on two counts of first-degree murder in June for an incident that happened in August of 2020. That shooting killed the daughter of a member of Memphis rap group Three 6 Mafia.

MPD said at the time that Murry had been arrested and charged in that case.

The Shelby County District Attorney’s office said in an email to WREG that Murry was indicted in the 2020 murders on June 25 of this year. He was not in custody at the time, and was not free on bond. The warrant on the 2020 was served Monday after his arrest in the recent murder case.

As the crime rate increases, many are just hopeful that better days are on the horizon.

This neighborhood has seen more than 300 crimes this year, ranging from assault to burglary. Currently, the city of Memphis is on pace to exceed last year’s record 332 homicides.
