MEMPHIS, Tenn. (WREG) — One person is dead and another is detained after a shooting at a Collierville clinic Tuesday afternoon.
Collierville Police said a healthcare worker was fatally shot by a patient in an exam room at the Campbell Clinic on Poplar Avenue.
A witness who was in the building told WREG a patient had been threatening someone at the clinic for the past week prior to the shooting. She said he got in Tuesday with a gun and shot and killed the person.
Police said only two people were involved in the shooting and the suspect was apprehended outside the clinic five minutes after the shooting. The suspect has not been identified.
Campbell Clinic identified the victim as orthopedic surgeon Dr. Benjamin Mauck. The clinic also released the following statement Tuesday night:
“Earlier today, we experienced a single shooter event inside our Collierville clinic.
We are shocked and heartbroken to confirm the incident resulted in the tragic loss of one of our highly respected and beloved physicians, Dr. Ben Mauck. We ask that you please lift his family in prayer.
During this difficult time, we will be working through many details and will keep you updated as we are able.
We have decided to close all Campbell Clinic locations tomorrow, July 12 and will communicate the reopening of all facilities at a later time.
We appreciate our local law enforcement officers who responded within minutes. We will continue to work closely with authorities as this remains an active investigation.
Our priorities remain Faith, Family and Patient Care. At this time, we ask for your prayers for the entire Campbell Clinic family, as well as for the privacy of Dr. Mauck’s family.”
Dr. Mauck also worked as a surgeon at Le Bonheur Children’s Hospital. Dr. Trey Eubanks, Interim President and Surgeon-in-Chief at Le Bonheur, spoke highly of Mauck, saying in a statement:
“Ben was a friend to so many of us – a respected member of our Le Bonheur family, a beloved colleague and a dedicated physician to so many patients.
We already miss him.
His death is an unthinkable tragedy, and I am at loss at what to say. I am so sorry to those who loved and knew him, for those who worked alongside him every day.
I am also grateful to this team, all of you. And I encourage each of you to be gentle with each other during this time. Ask for support and offer it when needed. We will all be affected by this loss in some way.
We will schedule debriefings and offering spiritual care and EAP sessions.
Please keep the entire Campbell Clinic family and especially Ben’s family in your thoughts and prayers.“
Police Chief Dale Lane praised officers for their quick response.
“Again, we’re talking about a guy who ran from a shooting scene and he’s in custody within five minutes, without additional loss of life, including our team the suspect,” Lane said.
He also expressed how proud he was of the people inside the clinic following what they learned in active shooting training.
“One of our officers highlighted to me as they entered the building, there were several employees that had taken charge of the patients that were to be seen and other employees making sure that everyone was accountable. They were practicing what they had been trained in case of an active shooter. And folks, that makes a difference.”
Multiple searches were conducted inside and outside the facility, including drone searches, to ensure there were no other encounters. Lane said they will also have officers in the area for the next few days.
“I talked to the director just a few minutes ago on the phone and his focus right now is on his employees and I told him that we would be there in anyway that we could,” he said. “And so we’ll have a presence there for the next few days and get through this as a community.”
Chief Lane has this message for the Collierville community.
“Don’t live your life in fear. These incidents drive fear and if we sit around and think about it and worry about it. We just have to be observant, pay attention to our surroundings, do what the people at Campbell Clinic did today. When it began they reacted the way they were trained,” he said.
