MEMPHIS, Tenn. — One person has been rushed to the hospital following a shooting outside of a health clinic in Orange Mound Wednesday.

It happened on the 1000 block of Haynes Street around 10:10 a.m. One man was found suffering from a gunshot wound and taken to Regional One in critical condition.

At the scene, cars with windows shot out were seen being towed from the parking lot of a Shelby County Health Department facility on Haynes at Deadrick, near Melrose High School.

In a statement, Shelby County Health Department officials confirmed that the incident took place outside of the Cawthon Health Clinic. They added that no employees were injured during the incident.

The Memphis Police Department and Shelby County Sheriff’s Office are investigating an incident that took place outside of the Shelby County Health Department’s Cawthon Clinic Wednesday morning. No Shelby County employees were injured. However, we stand ready to support employees feeling the mental anquish of being so close to this incident. We thank law enforcement for their quick response to the scene and are ready to assist in the investigation as needed.

The Cawthon Clinic will be closed for the remainder of Wednesday and all patients with appointments there today have been rescheduled to another Health Department clinic site.

Health Department Director Dr. Michelle Taylor added, “Community violence is a public health issue that impacts the health and well-being of all residents in Shelby County. Unfortunately, it came to our doorstep today, but we will not let this incident deter us from our work to promote, protect, and improve the health of all in Shelby County.”

Police say the suspects fled in a grey car traveling west on Barron.
