MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Two people have been charged after they took police on a high speed chase with their two children in the car in Hickory Hill.

According to Memphis Police, the chain of events started Monday at Ridgeway and Mt Moriah when officers saw a silver Kia Rio speeding through a stop light and attempted to stop it, but driver Dillion Yates refused.

Police lost track of the Kia but soon found it in a parking lot on Hickory Hill. While Yates was trying to leave the area, he hit a police car and proceeded to flee.

Yates continued to lead police on a chase down Kirby Parkway until he crashed and flipped over.

Latoya Jones and her two children, ages four and seven months, were also present in the vehicle.

Yates and Jones were taken into custody.

Jones told officers that the Kia Rio belonged to her and that she told Yates to keep driving because they didn’t do anything wrong.

Both Jones and Yates were charged with two counts of child abuse and neglect. Yates was additionally charged with evading arrest and aggravated assault.

Yates is behind bars on a $50,000 bond and is due in court on Thursday.

Court records show Jones was released on her own recognizance. WREG went to the address listed for Jones but were told she was not there. We also reached out to Pre-Trial Services to see if they can tell us why Jones was released on her own recognizance but we’re waiting to hear back.
