MEMPHIS, Tenn. — A fiery and fatal head-on collision claimed the lives of two drivers overnight Thursday in Southwest Memphis.

It happened near the corner of South Third and Shelby Drive around midnight.

MPD confirmed two cars were involved in a head-on collision. Both drivers were pronounced dead at the scene.

Two gentlemen who live feet away from where it all happened saw a scene they both describe as horrific.

“As soon as they hit, it caught on fire,” one of the men said.

Sadly, there was nothing they could do.

The flames incinerated one of the vehicles.

“The motor came out the car, went down the street. It got burnt up,” the man added.

First responders raced to the area but they were unable to save the victims. As fire crews turned their attention to dousing the unforgiving flames that consumed everything it touched.

For those who witnessed all of this, they are still grappling with a feeling of helplessness.

“It kind of hurt our feeling because we couldn’t help them,” the man said.

A barricade was soon put up on South Third as detectives launched an investigation, forcing drivers to find alternate routes.

The cause of the crash is still being investigated.
