MEMPHIS, Tenn.– One person was injured during an interstate shooting in Northeast Memphis Thursday night.
Police were called to a shooting in the eastbound lanes of I-40 near Covington Pike around 9:30 p.m. Traffic was detoured off the interstate at the Jackson/Austin Peay exit.
The driver of the Suburban told Memphis police he was traveling down the interstate when someone shot him. Detectives found a bullet hole in the door and the victim suffered from a gunshot wound to the back.
The victim was transported to Regional One in non-critical condition.
The shooting happened not far from where Janice Drake lives.
“I heard the gunshots and I saw the cars going southbound,” Drake said.
It’s a visual that keeps drivers like Drake on guard.
“I shoot myself. You gotta defend yourself here in Memphis some way or the other,” Drake said.
With this shooting, there have been at least 30 reported interstate shootings, according to MPD. It’s a 24 percent decrease year-to-date. Over the last two weeks, law enforcement has stepped up its patrols as a part of a statewide campaign.
“We’re trying to get our citizens just to take head to these things. Put your phones down when you’re driving, do not go above the speed limit,” said Karla Lipford with the Tennessee Highway Safety Office.
Meanwhile, Drake is calling for additional measures to better protect drivers.
“They do need to slow the roll. They need more cameras up to be honest with you, to take more pictures and get the license plate numbers if they have them and let the police handle it,” Drake said.
Police said they have no suspect information at this time.
