MEMPHIS, Tenn. — An armed barricade situation that started Sunday night in Whitehaven came to an end Monday morning, more than 12 hours later.

Memphis Police say the suspect exited his vehicle and was taken into custody at 8:20 Monday morning. Charges are pending.

Memphis Police say they responded to the 3400 Block of Lakeview Road regarding an armed “mental consumer” just before 7 p.m.

When police arrived, they said the man had left the scene but was believed to still be nearby.

Just before 8 p.m., officers say the found the man at the Brooks Express Store on 865 East Brooks Road.

When the man saw police, he allegedly fired shots at them before leaving the scene. Police say they did not return gunfire and no officers were injured.

At that time, a police pursuit was initiated and they were led back to the original call location.

The man then parked behind the house and refused to get out of his car. Officers say he was alone in the vehicle.

A large law enforcement presence was on the scene including the MPD, MFD, SWAT, and Crisis Negotiations Team.

“They were telling the gentlemen, asking him rather, to get out the car and that they were not going to hurt him. They just wanted to talk to him,” said a witness, who did not want to be identified.

All eastbound and westbound lanes between Brooks Road and Winchester Road were shut down.
