MEMPHIS, Tenn. — A police chase in Frayser on Friday morning ended with a crash, a suspect shot twice by an officer and two teenagers in custody.

Memphis Police said at 7:42 a.m., an officer on patrol noticed three people wearing masks and gloves, sleeping in a car stopped at a light in the middle of the street near New Allen Road.

When an officer looked inside the car, he noticed the three were armed, so he walked back to his vehicle and called for backup. The tags came back as stolen.

When police tried to make contact, they say one of the suspects woke up and pointed a gun at officers. Two officers fired their guns, hitting the suspect.

The car sped off and police chased it to St. Elmo at Edenburg Drive, where it hit a vehicle with a family inside.

Two suspects, ages 18 and 17, were taken into custody without incident. The driver, who was struck twice in the shooting, was taken to Regional One in critical condition but was later upgraded to non-critical.

One suspect is still on the run. Police say the suspect is a male between 17 and 20 years old with dreads, wearing a gray hoodie and blue jeans.

A woman and a 10-year-old who were in the car that was struck were taken to a hospital but are OK, police said.

Police said the teens were in a car stolen out of West Memphis early this morning. Two stolen pistols were found inside. One was stolen last night.

Officials roped off the scene with red tape Friday as helicopters circled the area. A utility pole was also knocked down during the accident.

The officers involved in the shooting will be relieved of duty pending the outcome of the investigation, according to MPD. No charges have been filed at this time.

The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation said it was not called to the incident.

Police said the teens knew each other from school.

Deputy Chief Stephen Chandler with Memphis Police said he couldn’t speculate why the suspects were asleep in the car in the middle of the road.

“Evidently, they were tired and fell asleep inside the vehicle at a red light. The traffic left and they didn’t,” he said.
