Attempted carjacking leads to shooting in Shelby County

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — The Shelby County Sheriff’s Office responded to a shooting in Shelby County early Tuesday.

Deputies were called to Shandy Drive and Turn Bow lane.

One neighbor who lives nearby said he heard several gunshots around 4:30 a.m.

Deputies say the shooting was the result of an attempted carjacking.

Cassandra Evans says she wasn’t involved in the shooting but says her car was stolen moments before the shooting.

“I woke up to gunshots. I looked out the window and I noticed my car was gone,” Evans said.

She believes the people involved in the shooting are possibly responsible for stealing her car and several others in the community overnight.

However, one neighbor wasn’t going to let the thieves get away so easily. Neighbors tell us there was a shootout between the suspects and the owner of one of the vehicles that the suspects were trying to steal.

“It’s a good community. It’s the people. These kids are trying to be something that they’re not,” Evans said.

Neighbors say there’s been an increase in teens walking through the neighborhood searching for cars to steal.

“Right now, they think it’s fun and games. You get involved in the wrong things, and you end up somewhere you are not trying to be in life,” Evans said.

Sources confirmed there was a short pursuit for the suspect following the shooting but deputies have not made any arrests.

No injuries were reported during the shooting.

SCSO has not made any arrests at this time.
