MEMPHIS, Tenn. — The principal of Sheffield High School has been temporarily reassigned following concerns raised by parents and students, a city spokesperson said Wednesday.
Dr. Melanie Black was moved to the central office at Memphis-Shelby County Schools during a review, the district said in an email.
MSCS reassigned her to “limit distractions in the learning environment and allow the completion of a fair and thorough review.”
The district did not specify what concerns parents and students had, but students at Sheffield earlier this month staged a walkout over several issues involving the principal, drawing the attention of interim Superintendent Dr. Roderick Richmond.
A letter written by students to the superintendent cited a lack of teachers, locked bathroom doors, and suspensions over dress code violations among other issues.
“We do not feel safe. We do not feel valued. And we do not feel heard,” students wrote.
