MEMPHIS, Tenn. — A man has been taken into custody after exchanging shots with police near Lamar Avenue in the airport area on Wednesday morning.
Memphis Police said they responded to a shooting call around 3 a.m. at the Economy Hotel at the corner of Lamar and Getwell.
When officers got to the scene, police say the suspect fired shots at officers and then barricaded himself inside one of the rooms. According to police, the man continued shooting at officers from inside the room causing officers to return fire.
Memphis Police officers escorted several families from their rooms into the event lounge in front of the hotel. Detectives said the suspect continued to fire shots at officers, and it was at that point that Memphis police returned fire.
Fortunately, no one was harmed during the shooting.
MPD says officers eventually took the suspect into custody, and he was treated on scene for a cut to his hand.
Police could be seen escorting some of the guests back into the hotel after it was all over.
Many people WREG spoke to who live and work in the area said they weren’t shocked to see the large police presence at the hotel. They said this is just one of many incidents to plague the area.
WREG has already reported on numerous crimes at the hotel this year. The most recent was in June when officers responded to a deadly double shooting.
No charges have been filed at this time, and Memphis Police said this is an ongoing investigation.
This is a developing story. WREG will provide updates to this story once they become available.
