MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Police say they exchanged gunfire with two suspects Monday night after they responded to an armed robbery of a restaurant in Parkway Village.

Officers were flagged down to 2865 S. Perkins around 9 p.m. A woman told them two men were robbing the business, a Sonic drive-through. Police said the suspects forced the workers to give them the money from the cash registers and the employees’ work aprons.

No officers or bystanders were reported injured. Police didn’t know if a suspect was struck by gunfire.

“The suspects fired shots at the responding officers, striking the squad car,” police said in a statement. “Officers returned fire toward the suspects.” The two suspects were able to escape officers.

With crime increasing across the country, one man said it is going to take a high power to turn things around.

“It all sums up to one thing, prayer,” Robert Moore said. “Without it, what’s happening gone continue to happen. It may get worse. Who knows, but the only way you can really be safe is if you pray.”

WREG has reached out to Sonic for comment but did not hear back.

MPD said one suspect is a five feet, nine inches tall man who was wearing a black hoodie, black pants, red-orange gloves, and black shoes.

The second suspect is six feet, three inches tall around 300 lbs. He was seen wearing a dark gray hoodie, light gray jogging pants and white shoes.

Police said the suspects are also responsible for multiple robberies in the area. No arrests have been made and police are continuing to investigate.
