MEMPHIS, Tenn. — A man is in custody after Memphis police said he fired shots near a deputy and then crashed into a car dealership parking lot.

An overnight officer on routine patrol in the area of Raines and Shelby Drive in Hickory Hill heard shots fired around 4 a.m., MPD Assistant Chief Crowe said.

The officer broadcast an alert to lookout for the suspect, but by the time officers heard it, the suspect had passed them.

Crowe says the officer did not return fire.

“Officers did spot the vehicle speeding on Winchester fleeing from the scene of it and then they found it crashed out,” Crowe said.

Deputies caught up to the suspect’s vehicle at the Toyota Dealership off Winchester and Quince. Police said there were no officers injured.

Authorities are still working to determine if the vehicle was stolen and why shots were fired in the first place.

Police said they have one man in custody, but it’s still too early to determine appropriate charges. He was taken to the hospital for evaluation.

ATF agents, CSI, and even homicide detectives joined in on the investigation to help bring this case to a close.

“This should be a call to action for everybody in the community, everybody to say enough is enough,” Crowe said. “We’re fed up with gun crime. We’re fed up with violent crime.”
