MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Southaven Police arrested and charged a man Wednesday in a road rage shooting that left a victim shot on Stateline Road.
Around 9:15 Tuesday night, Southaven officers responded to a store on Stateline Road near I-55 and found the victim shot in the thigh after a road rage incident.
A security camera at Hamilton Storage recorded police responding to the incident. It was a scary thought for Kim Cox, the manager at Hamilton Storage, who realizes road rage shootings can happen anywhere at any time.
“I don’t live far from here but I don’t want to get shot going from here to there, you know, for no reason,” Cox said.
Police haven’t released a motive for the shooting but a nearby business owner who did not want to be identified said he saw two vehicles headed west on Stateline Road and heard one gunshot.
He later saw a woman with a leg wound getting assistance from employees at a deli that had already closed for the night.
Detectives identified the suspect’s vehicle as a 2008 Chevy Cobalt with a Mississippi tag number. They then learned that a man had been seen that evening getting into the vehicle in a nearby neighborhood.
Detectives, SWAT and Uniform Patrol took the driver, Cortez Darling, into custody without incident Wednesday when he returned to the house on Sweet Flag Loop, police said. His vehicle was seized, and police said a firearm was found inside.
Darling is charged with attempted murder and drive-by shooting.
Meanwhile, as Kim Cox and co-workers get ready for their store’s grand opening Thursday, Cox says security against crime has a high priority.
“I mean everybody that works at Hamilton can watch the videos on their phones and we have several, several cameras,” Cox said.
Southaven Police have not released the name or condition for the victim wounded in the road rage shooting.
