Student with gun detained at Hickory Hill charter school

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — A 17-year-old Memphis high school student was arrested Monday after police say he was caught with a loaded handgun on campus.

Officers responded to Power Center Academy Hickory Hill High School, a Memphis Shelby County Schools charter school, just after 8 a.m. on Monday.

A school officer told Memphis Police he smelled a strong odor of marijuana in a classroom, so he checked seven people in the classroom. He found a loaded handgun, along with a marijuana vape, in a student’s backpack.

The .40-cal. handgun was loaded and had one live round in the chamber with six live rounds in the magazine, police said.

The school officer detained the student, then called police.

The student allegedly admitted the gun was his, and said he had it for protection.

He was detained on the scene and then taken to Juvenile Court. The suspect is charged with Carrying a Weapon on School Property.
