Man arrested in Northaven shooting

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — The Shelby County Sheriff’s Office says a man has been arrested in connection with a homicide in northwest Shelby County.

The sheriff’s office says 26-year-old Denorius Butler has been charged after a deadly shooting in the 5000 block of Blacksmith Drive.

The shooting happened Saturday evening. The victim went to the hospital in critical condition but later died of his injuries.

The sheriff’s office has identified the victim as 33-year-old Maurice Walker.

According to SCSO, another victim was following Walker home when Walker suddenly stopped and got out of his car. An argument was started over a previous incident in which Butler’s brother was accused of fondling Walker’s family member.

Police say at that point, Butler and several other unknown suspects fired shots at Walker. The other victim on the scene was able to drag Walker behind a car and shoot at the suspects. A neighboring residence was also shot multiple times by the suspects during the shooting.

The suspects fired a dozen rounds until officers arrived.

Police also say that Butler stated that he gave his weapon to one of the fleeing suspects and ran home. He was later taken into custody.

Butler is facing several charges, including second degree murder and attempted second degree murder. SCSO says he is also facing felony drug charges.
