FAYETTE COUNTY, Tenn. — A teenager who survived a possible drug overdose that killed two of her classmates at a Fayette County school has been charged in their deaths, the district attorney confirmed.

Investigators with the Fayette County Sheriff’s Office say that student is facing two counts of second-degree murder.

Two Fayette-Ware high school students are dead after a possible overdose hours before graduation Tuesday. A third was hospitalized in critical condition. That student, who has since recovered, is charged.

On Thursday, the teenager appeared in juvenile court, where cameras were not allowed.

The judge described the incident as a, “horrible sad, sad situation.”

During the hearing, a narcotics investigator with the Fayette County Sheriff’s office testified that fentanyl was found at the high school, where the girls died. The drug was also found at a home, after a search warrant.

According to investigators, they looked through text messages and social media and were able to find evidence to assist with the case.

Following his testimony, the judge told the girl, “You are lucky to be here today. This is something you will never forget.”

Based on information released in court, it’s believed the suspect was possibly friends with the two girls who died earlier this week.

Ultimately, the judge decided to release the girl into to the custody of her grandmother, telling her, “I still believe in you.”

Despite the vote of confidence, she will be placed on house arrest, undergo drug screenings and routine counseling.

The Fayette County community will come together Thursday evening to remember the two students who died with a balloon release.
