MEMPHIS, Tenn. — A student at Central High School in Memphis remains in critical condition after a shooting Thursday afternoon on Kimbrough Street near Union Avenue.
The teenager was struck by gunfire while driving a gold-covered Chevy a few blocks away from the school. According to Memphis Police, this was a “targeted” drive-by shooting.
MPD also says two other passengers were in the car along with the victim, but they were not injured.
While it didn’t happen on school property, the incident comes less than a month after Memphis Shelby County Schools announced its new focus on fighting crime involving discussions with parents, businesses, and elected leaders like District Attorney Steve Mulroy.
“Saving our children truly takes us all. It can’t be a “solo” conversation in Memphis anymore. It can’t be finger-pointing. It has to be a collective discussion,” said Tony Williams, Interim Superintendant of Memphis Shelby County Schools.
Dr. Regan Williams, Trauma Medical Director at Le Bonheur Children’s Hospital, agrees that crime continues to hit medical professionals hard as well.
This comes just after two teenage brothers were shot while walking on Steele Street in Frayser a couple of days ago.
“I’d like to impress upon the community that it really is going to take all of us coming together if we want to keep our children safe,” Dr. Williams said.
The suspect reportedly fled the scene on Union Avenue in a black four-door sedan.
