MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Two MPD officers were hurt after their two squad cars collided in Midtown Wednesday morning.
Emergency crews rushed to the intersection of McLean and Central Avenue in Midtown overnight Wednesday around 1:40 a.m.
Video shared with WREG shows firefighters quickly working to put out a car fire.
The vehicle had crashed onto a hill. To residents’ surprise, the vehicle was a Memphis Police squad car.
“I heard a boom and a skid. A loud skid,” one neighbor said.
Officials say the squad cars collided with each other. Police say both officers had their blue lights and sirens operating when they crashed.
A man who lives nearby said when he heard the crash this morning, he walked outside and saw smoke coming from one of the vehicles. He says out of nowhere a man appeared to assist the officer and get him out of the vehicle before it caught on fire.
Neighbors say the man who possibly saved the officer’s life was a fellow brother in blue.
Several people we spoke to say a female and male officer were involved in the accident.
“At first, he was alright, and then all of a sudden he flopped down, and he didn’t get back up. But the lady set up the whole time,” a neighbor said.
Several MPD officers gathered outside the Regional Medical center to support their injured colleagues.
Memphis police say the two are going to be ok.
One of the officers was issued a citation for disregarding a red light and not wearing a seatbelt. The second officer was also issued a citation for not wearing a seatbelt.
Officials say the officers were on their way to assist with a carjacking call.
We asked police if any arrests had been made in that carjacking call but we’ve not heard back.
MPD says the crash is an ongoing investigation.
