MEMPHIS, Tenn. — A man and woman were shot early Thursday morning in the Wolfchase area.
Memphis Police responded to a shooting on the 2500 block of Horizon Lake. Police said the two were transported to Regional One Hospital in critical condition. The woman did not survive her injuries.
Police said they detained two people but have not yet said if they will face any charges.
With this homicide, at least 89 people have been killed in Memphis this year. Currently, the city is on pace to surpass last year’s record of 346 homicides.
In a recent interview with WREG, Memphis Police Chief CJ Davis spoke about the increase in gun violence.
“The conditions are that people can carry guns anywhere and that’s an unfortunate thing for the citizens of our city,” Chief Davis said.
Among the ways the department is looking to address crime is by hiring more officers. Memphis mayor Jim Strickland is also proposing a ten percent pay raise for officers.
“If we’re gonna get a handle on our decades-old problem of violent crime, we must have a qualified and fully staffed police department,” Strickland said.
