MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Two teenagers, one a juvenile, were charged Wednesday in the shooting death of a young worker shot outside an East Memphis restaurant.
Zavon Payne, 19, was charged with facilitation of first-degree murder in the death of Contario Sevion, Memphis Police said.
Sevion, who was 17, was shot twice just after midnight Wednesday near the Five Guys restaurant on Ridgeway Road. His grandmother, Carmen Sevion, told WREG Contario worked there and had been taking out the trash when he was targeted.
A 16-year-old, whose name and photo were not released by police, was charged with first-degree murder, attempted murder and use of a firearm in a felony.
Police said that a witness recognized a white Ford Mustang in the parking lot that night. Police said a witness told them that it belonged to a former employee at Five Guys.
MPD said two males had been detained at the scene. According to records, Zavon Payne has been charged with facilitation of first-degree murder in the death of Contario Sevion.
Payne told officers he didn’t actually see the shooting but admitted his brother got out of his car with the gun, then he heard 10 to 15 shots. His bond is currently set at $150,000.
Contario’s family says he knew those now charged with his death.
“He grew up in a good household and I tried to teach him the right way to go, but when you get out here in these streets things happen,” said Carmen Sevion.
WREG has reached out to Five Guys corporate’s office but haven’t heard back.
