MEMPHIS, Tenn. – A group of protestors asking for justice for Tyre Nichols shut down all lanes of traffic on the Interstate 55 “old bridge” Friday night in Memphis.

A few dozen protestors planned to meet at Martyrs Park in downtown Memphis tonight for a call to action. The protest was organized by Black Lives Matter ahead of the release of the Tyre Nichols violent interaction with police.

When the group got to Martyrs Park, they discovered the park had been closed and began marching toward the I-55 bridge.

The protestors have moved cones that were blocking the entrance to the bridge.

The group wants the SCORPION unit and all other MPD task forces to be dissolved. They also want the police department to stop using unmarked cars and plainclothes officers and don’t want police officers to do traffic enforcement.

At 9 p.m., it appeared protestors had left the I-55 bridge, and traffic was moving again.

The protest began to dissipate after 10 p.m. but the group said they would return Saturday.
