MEMPHIS, Tenn. — The five former Memphis Police Department officers charged in the beating death of Tyre Nichols will appear in court on Thursday morning for a report date.

Desmond Mills, Emmitt Martin, Tadarrius Bean, Demetrius Haley, and Justin Smith are awaiting sentencing for federal charges. Bean, Smith, and Haley were recently found guilty of federal charges, while Mills and Martin took plea deals before the trial.

All five of the ex-officers are scheduled to be sentenced early next year.

The former officers are accused of beating Tyre Nichols during a traffic stop on January 7, 2023 leading to his death on January 10.

The are each facing state criminal charges of Second-Degree Murder, but the state trial date has not yet been set.

The defendants and their attorney will be back in court on Nov. 15.

Federal sentencing is set for late January. So, a state trial date should be set after that.
