MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Police say a woman in a stolen car tried to run over an officer during a pursuit in East Memphis.

Bethany Herron, 28, is charged with assault on a first responder, evading arrest and theft of a motor vehicle.

Police say it started around 3:30 a.m. Saturday at Park and Highland, when they spotted a Honda Civic that had been reported stolen. They tried to initiate a traffic stop but the driver sped off.

They caught up with the Honda as it was driving on Poplar with no lights on, before turning onto Ridgefield Road.

When officers turned on their blue lights, they say the driver of the Honda turned toward them and sideswiped a police vehicle. One male suspect got out and started running as officers chased him.

That’s when police say the driver, Herron, tried to run over one of the officers, though she did not hit him. She was finally taken into custody on Ridgefield.

Herron told officers she bought the car for $400 from a man nicknamed Twin, but she did not have paperwork and did not have any contact for Twin. Meanwhile, officers contacted the car’s owner, who said it had been stolen.

She is in Jail East on $30,000 bond.
