MLGW to hold community meeting regarding Elon Musk’s xAI

Doug McGowen

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Saturday you have a chance to have your questions answered on how Elon Musk’s new xAI Supercomputer in Memphis may impact you.

The community Q&A will be held at the Southwest Tennessee Community College campus in Whitehaven on Finley Road from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m.

MLGW as well as city leaders will be there. The meeting is open to the public and will be live-streamed.

So far, we know that xAI will be the largest, capital investment by a new-to-market company in the city’s history, and it’s raising a lot of questions.

MLGW President Doug McGowen shared that xAI could use up to 150 megawatts of power at peak times. Tennessee Valley Authority says any project using more than 100 megawatts must be approved.

xAI is building out this 750,000-sq. ft. former Electrolux plant in southwest Memphis.

WREG did some digging and found out TVA does not have a contract with the company right now. They told us, “We are working with xAI and our partners at MLGW on the details of the proposal and electricity demand needs.”

We asked MLGW if xAI is already on the grid, and they told us the company had moved into an existing building with existing utility services.

McGowen says he is working to make sure this major move doesn’t impact the local utility. “We did all of our work to protect the rest of the customers to make sure that everybody has the power they need and clean water.”
