MEMPHIS, Tenn. — “Well, I just hope he doesn’t come back because I do own a gun,” said one neighbor who didn’t want to be identified.

She said if Devin Herndon tried to attack her, she would not hesitate defending herself or others in her Frayser neighborhood.

Herndon is in jail after police said he beat, kidnapped, and robbed his ex-girlfriend.

“They had the whole house surrounded,” she recalled. “They were beating on all the windows.”

She watched as police surrounded a home on Marvin Street looking for Herndon after the May attack.

Police said Herndon got into it with the woman over something he saw on social media.

Officers reported Herndon choked the woman, punched her in the face, and flattened one of her tires.

“Oh that’s scary to be that close, and I didn’t hear or see anything,” said one neighbor.

Police said Herndon came back the next day to beat the woman some more.

The woman tried fighting back and running away, but officers said Herndon grabbed a tree branch and hit her in the face.

Court records revealed Herndon forced his bloodied ex-girlfriend into her car, drove away, and held her captive for six hours before taking the woman to the hospital.

“If he was, you know, intending on harming her, he could have killed her,” said one neighbor. “So, they should, you know, do what they can to the fullest extent of the law.”

Herndon has a $100 bond and will be in court on June 30.
