Man Accused of Pretending to Be Cop and Raping Woman

(Memphis)  A Memphis man is in jail accused of raping a woman while pretending to be a police officer.

Police say Brandon Williams met his victim online last year and when she agreed to meet him in person, he raped her at his apartment.

The alleged rape happened in August 2012.

Police recently matched William’s DNA with the victim’s rape kit.

He was arrested Monday.

You never know who you might meet when you befriend someone online.

Police say when the woman went to his apartment on Seminole Lane, Williams was wearing a Shelby County communications shirt and informed her that he was the police and was going to arrest her.

Police say Williams took the woman’s ID and her cell phone and began writing down her information and made some phone calls pretending to be a police officer.

The woman says Williams gave her two options: have sex with him or go to jail.

That’s when police say Williams raped her and then escorted her back to her car, as if releasing her from custody.

“I think that is so horrible and I’m living so close to that,” said Patty Sykes, who lives in the same apartment complex as the suspect.

Sykes says the incident is just one reason she doesn’t do online social networking, “You got to be careful in this day and time, whether it’s online or out at a movie, you just have to be more careful.”

Police say the victim recently identified Williams in a photo line-up.

Police have not said why it took so long to get to that point of the investigation, since the assault happened last year.

They do say a sample of his DNA matched the DNA collected from the victim right after the attack.

Williams has been charged with criminal impersonation and rape.

His bond has been set at $50,000.
