(Memphis) – It’s been several weeks since Marilyn Jenkins laid eyes on the man who lives two doors down from her, 29-year-old Eldridge Galloway.
“If he was in the neighborhood, I haven’t seen him since [the alleged rape] happened, “she said. “I had just heard about it, that they were down here looking for him.”
Memphis Police say Galloway was arrested late Friday night. He has been on the run since being accused of a violently raping an 18-year-old girl last month.
“No man, as far as I’m concerned, should do anything to a woman like that,” Jenkins said.
The attack started when the young woman was walking by herself in the area near S. Willet Street and Walker Avenue.
Galloway allegedly put his victim in a choke hold until she passed out.
That’s when police say he threw her in the back of his car and took her up the road to his house where he raped her, beat her and threatened to kill her.
“I didn’t think he’d do that,” said Jenkins. “As long as I had known him, he has been a friendly person.”
Police say Galloway would not let the 18-year-old leave, but she finally got away and called for help when Galloway fell asleep.
Jenkins is glad her neighbor is behind bars. She says she’s got three daughters and can’t imagine one of them falling victim to such a violent attack.
“He shouldn’t have done what he did,” she said. “Like I said, if it were my child, I’m sorry, you’d just have to lock him up and throw away the key.”
Galloway is in jail on multiple charges including Aggravated Rape and Kidnapping. He is currently being held on a $1 million bond.
