Man arrested for shooting that killed bystander

Montavious Jennings

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Police have arrested whom they believe is responsible for the murder of an innocent bystander in North Memphis earlier this week.

Montavious Jennings faces both murder and attempted murder charges after Wednesday’s deadly shooting on Decatur Street.

Police said a fight in the middle of the street between a group of people sparked the shooting. Jennings is accused firing several shots at two women and a teenage boy, but those he targeted weren’t hurt.  A bullet flew more than 1,200 feet and struck Frederick Richardson in the head.

“That man didn’t bother nobody,” said neighbor Joy Coxen.

Police said Jennings took off in his car with four other people, while loved ones tried to revive the North Memphis father in his yard.

Investigators tracked Jennings’ car to a friend’s home. Those friends told officers Jennings was the shooter.

At first,  police were looking for five suspects. But now officers said Jennings is the only one responsible for Richardson’s murder. Investigators don’t expect to arrest anyone else.

Victor Robinson is relieved to hear Jennings is off the streets but believes Memphis needs to do more to keep guns away, too.

“They are made to kill other humans,” said Robinson.

Neighbor Joy Coxen said the bullet that killed Richardson could have hit anyone,  but she’s faithful she’ll stay safe inside her home.

“I pray all the time,” said Coxen.

Jennings heads to court Monday.
