MEMPHIS, Tenn. — A Memphis teenager was locked up, charged with robbing five different people on South Main Street.
Police said Keywon Murphy, 18, robbed the people at gunpoint, threatened them and even groped a woman.
Sydney Alexander lives in Midtown, but she said she comes down to South Main during the day to run with her friend.
Although she feels safe, she said that was partly because she takes measures to protect herself.
“I just don’t come out by myself,” she said.
Lisa Brumleve with the Downtown Memphis Commission said that is important to do, regardless of what part of town you’re in.
“If they are getting out of their car on a completely dark street, just like if they were in East Memphis getting out of their car on a dark street or anywhere else in our city,” she said. “You just have to be smart.”
Police said the man responsible for a string of armed robberies on South Main was arrested and now sits in jail.
They claimed Murphy and a juvenile robbed three women outside South of Beale and a couple just a block over in June. It was reported Murphy even groped a woman during the second robbery.
While Brumleve said she’s grateful he was locked up, she said she also hoped it would not scare people away from downtown.
“It is a really great time to come downtown with all of the improvements that have been made, and we have great local retailers,” she said. “We need people to come downtown.”
Murphy’s bond was set at $140,000.
He was scheduled to be back in court Sept. 2.
