(Memphis) A Memphis man was arrested and charged with multiple counts, from rape to aggravated assault and robbery.
It’s a crime neighbors are calling unthinkable, “It’s like something you see in a movie, not in real life.”
Four people at a home in the 1200 block of Pera Avenue were tied up, tortured, and robbed.
Memphis Police say 28-year-old Darnell Yancey is one of two suspects that pulled a gun on a couple as they came home late one night about a week ago.
He then allegedly forced them inside and tied them up, where he demanded money, ransacked the home and began torturing the couple with a hammer and a drill.
“That’s beyond evil you can’t do that to someone and expect God to look down upon you,” said neighbor, Martha Moore.
The torture gets worse. One of the victims tells police the he was sexually assaulted with a broomstick.
“That doesn’t make any sense at all unless they’ve got some grievance against them,” said Moore.
During the attack, police say two more unsuspecting people showed up at the house. They were also tied up and robbed. Yancey and his accomplice then allegedly stole a TV and took off in a victim’s cars.
“I hope they recover,” said one neighbor who wished to remain anonymous. “At least they got away with their lives.”
She is now considering moving because of the attack, “This neighborhood really has gotten scary. There have been all kinds of things happening here in the last year and it’s terrifying.”
What disturbs people here most is length the suspects allegedly went to inflict pain. After the attack, police say the victims found their two dogs in the backyard shot to death.
“People just get pleasure out of hurting people and it’s just sad,” Moore said
Yancey is being held at the Shelby County Jail with no bond.
Police are still looking for that second suspect. If you have any information, you can call police at 901.528.CASH.
