MEMPHIS, Tenn. — A woman was asleep in her dorm early Sunday morning when she was woken up by a man holding a knife to her throat, police said.

Police arrived at the Fogelman residence hall in the 100 block of Barksdale Street at about 2:30 a.m. Sunday.

The victim, a 19-year-old Memphis College of Art student, told police she woke up to the man on top of her with a knife. She fought him off, and the suspect fled the scene after her roommate confronted him, police said.

After reviewing security footage, the college’s assistant director of campus safety and security, Russell Bates, determined the suspect had been waiting near the building’s security gate and entered behind a student’s vehicle at about 2 a.m. The suspect then went door-to-door until he found an unlocked suite.

Police described the suspect as a white male who is about 5 feet 7 inches or 5 feet 8 inches tall and about 170 to 180 pounds. He has short brown hair and was wearing eyeglasses, an orange shirt with buttons and khaki pants.

This is an ongoing investigation, and police have not yet made an arrest.
