Man charged for fight with off-duty officer

Arthur Jones

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — The man arrested after a physical altercation with an off-duty police officer has now been charged.

Arthur W. Jones, 55, of Dunn Road, was charged with assault.

He had gotten into a fight Saturday with Deborah Birdsong, a Memphis Police sergeant, outside Wizards on 1999 Madison Avenue.

Birdsong said she was in her car trying to leave 1995 Madison Avenue, but another vehicle was blocking the driveway. She honked her horn and got out of her car to see whom the vehicle belonged to.

She and Jones then allegedly got into a verbal altercation, which then turned physical. Jones allegedly spit on Birdsong and hit her in the face. Both sides suffered injuries.

As Birdsong was trying to subdue the suspect, her husband, who is also a police sergeant and was in uniform at the time, came from behind the building and helped take Jones into custody.

Jones was released on a $100 bond. He will appear in court Monday.
