Man charged with child abuse arrested after violating probation

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — A Memphis man has been arrested for violating his probation after he was charged with child abuse.

The cases go back to last year, but as WREG found out, the man still had access to the children after DCS had been notified of the initial alleged abuse.

“He’s not that type of person. He doesn’t abuse kids. He whooped her, and he shouldn’t have.”

Lawanda Ryan was adamant her son, Corry Bonner, is not a child abuser.

He was arrested on Thursday for violating his probation.

In October of last year, police received a report from the Cornerstone Prep School of possible abuse.

A teacher said her 6-year-old student was limping.

Other school administrators said the little girl had bruises on her body.

The child told them Bonner, who is not her father, quote “whooped” her.

The victim’s seven-year-old sister said she had also been abused.

According to a police affidavit, police searched their records and discovered Bonner was a suspect in other abuse cases with the children.

A parenting plan had been put into place that said Bonner would not physically discipline the victims, but police said he violated the plan.

“The lady at the school called the state. So many accusations on him that’s not true,” said Ryan.

Then a month later, the school contacted police again.

The young victim said she was kicked in the head by Bonner.

However, according to a police report, her story changed several times.

She told a DCS investigator she received the bump from being pushed into a wall by Bonner.

A warrant for Bonner’s arrest was issued this past July.

WREG reached out to several groups to see what a parenting plan is and how Bonner was still allowed to be around children if officials were aware of possible abuse.

People at the Exchange Club said they’re usually for parents going through a divorce and DCS considers what’s in the best interest of a child.

Ryan admitted her son might’ve been harsh when disciplining the children but was firm.

He is not always violent.

“He knew that I wouldn’t uphold him if he’s wrong. If he’s wrong, I’m 100% for justice but he just don’t go around and hurt kids.”

WREG reached out to DCS, but they said they couldn’t release any information.
