MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Neighbors in a south Memphis neighborhood were on edge after learning a 7-year-old said she was raped in their apartment complex.

WREG was told the details were too graphic to share, but we do know Eric Wooten was charged with two counts of raping a child.

His bond was set at $40,000.

Police refused to reveal how Wooten knew the child or whether they are related but said he admitted to the crime.

If you pull up to Robin Hood Park Apartments in South Memphis, you will find a welcome sign and a wide open fence.

But after police announced Wooten raped a 7-year-old girl inside one of their buildings, renters began to worry it may be a bit too inviting.

“No gates. No code. They need all of that. Put a gate up. Put a code in, because that’s nasty,” Tamala Thornton said.

The girl’s mother told police Wooten abused her daughter a month ago, but officers just arrested him Monday.

Knowing Wooten admitted to the crime, made neighbors even more nervous.

“I have nieces, and I have nephews,” Thornton said. “I would cry and be hurt if anything happened to one of them.”

With young kids running all over the complex, renters said they were relieved Wooten is locked up.

“He should be charged to the fullest because that’s a child,” one mother said.

Wooten will be in court next week.
