MEMPHIS, Tenn. — A man is dead after gunfire erupted outside a hotel on American Way.

People staying at the Home One Extended Stay on American Way told WREG that early Wednesday morning they were awakened by one gunshot followed by the arrival of multiple Memphis Police officers.

“As quickly as they responded I knew something wasn’t right. Something about the whole situation just felt off,” said guest Kenneth Rowley.

Rowley said he was in the process of getting his day started when around 6:30 am he said he heard a single gunshot just feet from his door.

“A few minutes later, the blue light special was out here,” he said.

Memphis Police said a man was found dead from a gunshot wound inside of this truck sitting in the Home One Extended Stay parking lot.

Rowley along with others we spoke to said they saw the man often over the past few days. Rowley described the man as being middle-aged, and said he was in shock to learn it was that same man sitting lifeless inside the truck.

“Didn’t look like he was having any problems with anybody. He was real friendly,” he said.

At the time, police did not release any details about what may have led to the shooting but said they are investigating this as a homicide. However, there’s no information on a suspect.

“Gunshots around here are not that unusual, but right here in the parking lot? Doesn’t happen,” said Rowley.

People we talked to believe the possibilities of what may have led to the shooting are endless.

“Whoever this family is keep them in your prayers because nobody knows the situation right now,” said one woman who wished to remain anonymous.
