MEMPHIS, Tenn. — A woman was charged over the weekend following a fatal hit-and-run wreck on Poplar Avenue near Suggs Drive in East Memphis.
According to authorities, dispatch received a call of a man down on Poplar near Suggs Drive around 11:30 p.m. Thursday. When they arrived, they found a 55-year-old man dead with injuries consistent with being hit by a vehicle, but the driver was not on the scene.
Dasmine Garrison, 24, is charged with leaving the scene of an accident involving death. Police say she contacted them Saturday and admitted to striking the victim, identified as Robert Watkins, while driving her 2018 Honda.
Garrison is a production technician with WREG. She posted bond Saturday.
At the time of the hit-and run, the weather was kind of like it was Friday: rainy and chilly. Drivers in the area said they couldn’t believe anyone would just leave someone out in the cold.
“Just left him lying in the street,” said Michael Watkins, who lives nearby. “That is cold-blooded, man. That is sad.”
Greg Hunt spends a lot of time taking care of business on Poplar. He thinks whoever hit the man was afraid to stop.
“If you hit someone, you know you hit them,” Hunt said. “It’s ridiculous. People are scared. These days most of them don’t have insurance either.”
He’s convinced that someone saw something, or a surveillance camera could have caught it in action with how busy that section of Poplar Avenue is.
“This place is pretty crowded around 11:30 at night,” Hunt said. “It’s a lot of lights around here. Something on video, that is the only way you’re going to catch them.
