MEMPHIS, Tenn. — A man was found guilty Friday of stealing from a Missouri couple who came to Memphis to participate in the St. Jude Marathon.
Anmichael Leonard, who has eight prior felonies, was convicted of theft of property over $1,000, identity theft, and fraudulent use of a credit card. The 54-year-old faces up to 24 years in prison.
Two cellphones, a phone charger, iPod, purse, wallet, credit card, room key, prescription medications and a pair of jeans were taken from the couple’s room at the Doubletree Hotel Downtown the morning of Dec. 4, 2011.
One of the victims and a friend used the GPS tracking system on one of the phone’s to help police find Leonard.
Shortly before his arrest, Leonard was spotted wearing a red baseball cap that belonged to the couple’s son. The hat had the boy’s initials and those of a St. Jude patient who died a month before the race.
He also had a bag containing most of the stolen items and a receipt showing the stolen credit card was used to buy food.
A verdict was not reached on an aggravated burglary charge. That will be decided at Leonard’s sentencing next month.
The Missouri couple is part of a running group that participates in the marathon each year.
