Man jailed for filing false report

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Filing a false report got one Memphis man in a whole lot of trouble.

Police said Jesse Taylor told them his car was stolen in early May at the Autozone on East Raines Road.

But when they did some digging, they realized he was actually the crook.

When they arrived on the scene, police were told Taylor left car running while he went into the store.

In the car was a woman named Summer Smith.

Taylor told police she took off with the car.

After pressing him further several weeks later, Taylor admitted he made the whole story up and his car was never stolen.

You may think reporting your car stolen is a victimless crime but in reality it could be costing you.

While it’s not clear if Taylor filed the report for false insurance purposes, WREG was told insurance fraud is a big problem.

The FBI said $40 billion is lost each year because of insurance fraud.

That costs you and your family between $400 and $700 in increased premiums.

Taylor’s bond was set at $10,000 and he has been charged with filing a false report.
