MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Police are investigating a shooting in Frayser that left a man dead.
The shooting was reported on Signal around 2:30 a.m. Friday morning, but as of now police are releasing few details about the case.
Flashing blue and red lights are the last thing people living on Signal Street expected to see.
“Normally it’s quiet here. That’s kinda shocking cause they seemed to be a quiet little family down there,” said one neighbor.
Details of the deadly morning are murky.
Right now police will only say when they arrived at the home they were met by a man who said he was involved in a shooting. He said he was at the home when a fight broke out between a woman and another man. He said during the fight the man armed himself with a gun, so he got a gun and shot him.
So far no charges have been filed.
Just around the corner, less than a mile away from the shooting, people are gathering this weekend for a Block Party for Peace at the Ed Rice Community Center. It’s an effort to prevent something like this from happening.
“You gotta keep on plugging at it — you gotta keep on plugging away,”said State Rep. Antonio Parkinson.
Parkinson organizes the block party every year. He said while the nearby shooting isn’t the way he wanted to start the weekend, he hopes people will gain inspiration from the opportunities at the party.
“The whole event is an education vehicle and information vehicle,” he said.
The block party offers fun for kids but also job opportunities that Parkinson hopes will lead people out of a life of crime.
“It’s a big city. There’s a lot to do, a lot of work,” said Parkinson.
The block party is free on Saturday and Sunday.
