MEMPHIS, Tenn. — A holy war between brothers sent both to jail.
John and Travis Amos were both arrested Monday night after getting into a fight over their religious differences.
WREG spoke with another brother, Revis Amos, who said John was trying to force the rest of his family to convert to his religion.
“He always claimed he wanted to help his little sisters and brothers, but you’re not helping us,” Revis said of John. “You’re trying to hurt us.”
Revis said he and his brother Travis were chased by John because they would not give up their religion, Christianity.
He said he was not sure what John’s religion is.
“He believes in Yahweh,” he said.
Revis said Travis moved recently and was keeping some of his things at John’s apartment on North 7th Street in North Memphis.
Police said John started throwing Travis’s things out because of the fight.
Travis’s wife and 7-month-old baby were with them too when Revis said John charged at them with a knife.
“He was running toward my brother Travis with the knife,” Revis said. “My brother, he jumped the gate. I saw him coming back toward me, so I got in the truck and tried to pull off.”
Police said John slashed the tires.
They also claimed Travis broke the windows of John’s car out with a hammer.
Revis told WREG while the glass was broken, Travis did not do it.
Even with the slashed tires, Travis and Revis Amos tried to drive to their mother’s house about five miles away on Evergreen.
They said John Amos chased them the whole way there, and the chase ended at the corner of Chelsea and Evergreen.
Police arrived and arrested both brothers.
John was charged with domestic assault and vandalism. Travis has a vandalism charge.
Meanwhile, Revis said he was not sure how his family will move on from this, but he has given up on John.
“He’s burned that bridge too many times, and I will not allow him to try and come across it again.”
Both brothers will be in court Wednesday.
John Amos’s bond was set at $2,500. A bond amount for Travis Amos was not listed.
